It’s in 6, 12 18 months. It depends on how big your baby is. I have knitted this pattern so many times. It is a great pattern and fits really well. I usually knit any extra two bands of the pattern.

      Sizes are 0 -3 months, 6 -9 months, 12 -18 months.
Not very generous sizing for today’s kids.
Have a look at Ravelry Shepherd # 759, lots of projects and comments.

      To fit underarm 40cm (47cm:53cm)
      Actual size 48cm (56cm:63cm)
      Length approx 26cm (31cm:36cm)
      Sleeve length approx 12cm (15.5cm:19cm)

No size specified, but I’ve made several; it will fit a 9 month old, I think, and still fits at about 18 months!! I don’t know how, but it just seems to grow with the child.

I’m struggling with this. On the yoke the pattern doesn’t make sense. I’ve tried twice now and it’s still not right. I’m finding the instructions very confusing.

Hi Wendy – Just found this blog regarding this old and gorgeous pattern. From your comment, I assume you have no trouble understanding how it works. I am baffled!! I am doing the 6-9 month and am at the armhole stage. Have completed the first lot of 6 pattern rows and then repeated it once, as stated. Now down to 69 stitches. Pattern now reads, rep last 2 rows only. What row of pattern do I start decreasing and then what row do I keep decreasing on? My understanding is by the time you get to 61 stitches, you should have just finished the 5th row of pattern. Any help you can give would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you.

Did you work this out Claudia? I am in the same predicament as you were and I can’t understand at all how to determine where in the pattern I am when I’m reducing stitch number for the raglan armholes. Not sure why I can’t see it at all. If anyone else is reading….. when shaping for raglan armholes on the back of the jacket the pattern describes the first two rows which include casting off stitches at the beginning of each row. Then for row 3, it says k1,p1, pattern to last 2 sts, p1,k1. How to determine where in the pattern to resume after the k1,p1? Do you just have to do complicated maths (I have drawn a grid) to work it out?
      Thanks

Did you solve this? (The pattern for the raglan)
        I’m baffled!
Ready to give up but I’ve knitted all the pieces and really like the sweater.
Amazing that you can’t even tell from the picture how it should look.
Any help at all would be appreciated, I’m desperate…

    Hi there

I’d love to knit this for my 4.5 year old grand daughter, in a nice bright colour to wear with her jeans. I just need the amount of stitches and if anyone has worked this pattern out to fit up to a 6 year old yet?

    Kind regards,
    Pam

I first knitted this pattern from the Shepherd leaflet. The Baby Love pattern by Patons had extra sizes so I was knitting the smallest size. PLEASE NOTE A MISTAKE ON PAGE 4 OF PATTERN. It is under the yoke instructions. First 4 rows ,page 3 are correct. Row 5 , top of page 4 is correct. Knit 3 rows is correct. THEN the next lines of pattern, listed as rows 1-5, then to row 8, are incorrect (repeated) and should be taken out of instructions. From row 9 it’s all correct. I love this pattern, with or without the hood.

I was just looking this up to see if there are amendments as it is not working out and appears to be all garter stitch in the yoke instructions but not in the picture . Trying to work it out ! 😊

Yes I just got to the top and found it way too small to fit the hood! So unpicked it down to just above the start of the yoke, and now I read above that there is an error in the pattern (which means decreasing way too many stitches!). I will now try without those extra rows and decreases!

I am currently knitting this pattern and am a little confused. The instructions for the Yoke has rows 1-8 printed twice…is this correct or a printing error?

Hello , confused me too ! Skip the second set of 1-5 eg .. just do row 5 , top of page followed by 3 rows of garter then go straight to row 9 .. knit row 😊

Oh this IS a real classic!
There’s a kind of magic about this pattern, it brings out the adorableness of any baby.
I had two of these for mine in the ’80s.
And really practical and cosy too, with that hood.

    Thank you for posting.

This pattern has been available in Otago, New Zealand for nearly 70 years. At the Mosgiel Woolen Mills it was known as The Mosgiel Jacket’. Generations of kids have worn, and still are wearing it. It does seem to grow with the kids. Now coming in three sizes makes it even better! 💕💕💕

This pattern can also be knitted in 4ply, I have done many over the years and it will fit from newborn up……. I recently did a couple of bassinet sized blankets in the same pattern with garter stitch boarders…. Will be coining more of those as well……Jude in Hastings….

What a wonderful find! I have been following the Kaipoi (nz) pattern, and the hood instructions just didn’t seem Right to me, but I was loathe to call them Wrong. This has given me the confidence to precede, following your right pattern. The Kaipoi instructions for the yoke were rather messy too, but I managed to navigate those.

A jacket of this pattern was given to me by a dear friend for my first born. (We met in the city hospital, waiting it out, her with twins, I had just moved to her area in a country town). Now I have her pattern for my grandchild. I miss my friend and her hospitality to all.
