Woolmark – Everything About Yarn.

In the world of fashion, wool is an essential component. But where does it come from? Which animal produces the most valuable wool? And what do those labels signify? We’ll uncover the answers right here.

WOOLMARK

  1. Internationally recognised symbol (woolmark), which guarantees pure, first-use virgin wool.
  2. and 3. signify Woolmark Blend or Wool Blend, for fibre blends with at least 50% first-use virgin wool or a maximum of 50% non-woolen fibres.

Yarn’s Origin – Where the Yarn Comes From

Sheep contribute the majority of our yarn supply. Yet, the creation of fluffy jumpers and jackets owes much to specialized animal fibers. Vicuna, akin to the Bugatti of wool-producers, is a rare and finicky relative of the camel found in the high Peruvian mountains. Its wool surpasses even the famed cashmere goat’s, known for its luxurious quality and widespread use. Similar to cashmere but with added fluffiness and care requirements, angora rabbit wool makes its mark. Alpaca wool, originating from the high, chilly Andean regions, boasts exceptional warmth and durability thanks to its lengthy, dense, and fine fibers. Other vital fibers like linen, silk, and cotton come to the fore during warmer seasons, offering excellent cooling properties and easy maintenance.
